How To Compose A Drawing — Theuer Method

Before you think about composition, focus on your subject, Find an aspect of it that you like. Maybe you like the look of an entire table or just the knotted grain. Whatever your focus, be sure to place that prominently on your paper. And then imagine your 2D object has weight like its 3D counterpart does in reality. And imagine that color and shadow have weight too. White space is weightless.

1.Unbalanced
Compositions can be unbalanced. For example, if you drew a table in the bottom left corner of a piece of paper, its weight would appear to drag that corner down. If you then stuck a pin in the center of this drawing and stuck it to the wall, the table would pull on the paper so much the paper would spin and wind up pointing table down. And then if you spun the paper like a pinwheel, it would wobble.
Unbalanced compositions are used to express good and bad strong feelings. Your table, for example, looks lonely.

2.Balanced
Compositions can be balanced. For example, if you added an equal amount of shading to the top right of your drawing from the previous example, your drawing would appear to even out. You could also add object(s). If you then spun your drawing on a pin like above, it would spin evenly and even wind up level when it stopped spinning.
Balanced compositions are used to express comfortable feelings. Now your table looks more at home.

EXERCISE – Look at a group of objects like leaves on a tree or bricks in a wall, in real life or in a photo. Focus on only a few of the objects that catch your eye, ones that you like. Draw them prominently on your paper in either a balanced or an unbalanced composition. Try following the shading rules described in my “shading” lesson.

Painters Lose Shirt Caulking Hardieplank

As many homeowners can attest, replacing delaminated LP siding has become a big expense. The memories of the class action suit brought against Louisiana Pacific to offset the damages the homeowners suffered now seems to have fadded into the past. Some homeowners were rewarded money for their losses and some that knocked on the courts doors later found that the money allocated had run out.

During this period of time a new type of siding entered the market that offered the durability that most homeowners demanded. It was perfect timing for a cement based siding to enter the market. Many homeowners and builders rushed to buy hardiePlank to replace the decaying siding that plagued the housing industry. Finally a siding existed that would probably outlast the owner. Most folks viewed this siding as an answer to prayer.

Most painters in our industry welcomed the siding. Not having to deal with swelling siding that wouldn’t hold paint, certainly made our job easier. While most homeowners and painters were excited about this new long lasting siding, most weren’t aware that keeping it caulked would become the new problem that everyone would talk about. The problem was and still is: How do you keep HardiePlank caulked?

For homes that have exposure to sunlight and widely varying temperatures, keeping HardiePlank properly caulked is a challenge. HardiePlank expands and contracts a lot under these conditions. Many caulks on the market today simply do not have the elasticity to handle the movement of HardiePlank.

I have seen the expansion and contraction of HardiePlank siding pull fresh caulk apart within 24 hours after application. It’s great siding to have on your home, but you better know what you’re doing when it comes to caulking all the joints.

You certainly can’t be economy minded with your purchase of caulk when HardiePlank is involved, or you will be doing the job over again. Many painters and homeowners alike seem confused when selecting caulk for this siding. Drawing from my direct exposure to HardiePlank and the associated problems of keeping it caulked, I found that using caulks that comply with either ASTM C 834 or ASTM C 920 work. Applying a caulk that falls in this catagory is doing so within the manufacturers written instructions.

I personally prefer using an elastomeric caulk on my customer’s homes. Elastomeric caulks are formulated to bond to concrete surfaces. Sherwin Williams carries a product called Shermax Super Stretch Elastomeric Caulk that I find works well with HardiePlank Siding. It has the elasticity to handle the constant expanding and contracting of HardiePlank. All my crews are required to use this product and I see few problems with caulk separation. One common problem that many homeowners find is the HardiePlank itself was installed improperly. At least a 1/8 inch gap between siding and trim should be left by the installer to allow for a proper amount of caulk to be applied. The 1/8 inch gap is in accordance with caulking manufacturers written instructions. (leave 1/8″ gap between siding, trim and butt joints so adequate caulk can be applied.) If less than 1/8 inch gap is available to apply caulk, then the caulk is too thin to handle the amount of stretching it must endure. I have seen Elastomeric Caulk separate where less than a 1/8 inch of a gap existed in the siding joints. Owens Corning also sells a very good caulk for this type application.

The last point I want to make is there are solutions to this common annoyance. As a painter it is your resposibility to deliver a product and service that will last. As a homeowner make sure you discuss your painter’s plans on how he is going to solve this common problem with HardiePlank. This action will go a long way toward avoiding loss of time and money.

Review Of Super Nanny

In August of 2006, a Scottish family began to seek legal advice claiming that the reality television series, Super Nanny, had distorted the image of their family in order to gain higher ratings for the television show. Super Nanny herself, the British Jo Frost, was called in by the Docherty family to help organize their household, put the family on a daily schedule, and help train their rowdy, out of control children. The episode, like many other episodes, featured the family’s three young boys who kick, swear, punch and spit at their parents. The parents were depicted in a similar fashion in the episode, revealing two out of control people who scream constantly and curse at each other and their young children. After the show aired, the family claims that their neighborhood and community began shunning them because the reality show had depicted them as a dysfunctional family. The parents claim, like several other parents who have called Jo Frost into their home, that the show was edited to make them look worse than they really were — which is a typical complaint of people who participate in any type of reality program. However, the Dochertys also admit that the family is functioning much better since Jo Frost departed their household. The lawsuit is likely to be tossed out before it reaches litigation.

Super Nanny is filmed both the UK and the US, and has made nanny extraordinaire Jo Frost a household name. Frost is a lifelong nanny who has worked for many wealthy families in the UK, and now can add author to her many credits, having recently published a book on child rearing. Originally a British reality show, Super Nanny first aired in the UK in 2004. Super Nanny remains an extremely popular show, drawing 3.1 million viewers to its premiere episode in 2006, though previous seasons drew nearly twice that amount.

The same premise is shown on both continents; the show features Jo Frost arriving at a household that is usually in complete disarray, with at least two children running wild and screaming and the parents at their wit’s end. Frost has become known for her catch phrases You have been very, very naughty” and “This behavior is totally unacceptable”. While maintaining a strict, no nonsense demeanor, Frost uses encouragement and positivity as her core techniques. She assists the parents by helping them regain control in the household by using discipline techniques like the naughty chair for a highly effective time out period. At first, many parents insist that her techniques will probably not work with their horribly-behaved and ill tempered children, but by the end of the show, they are always true believers in the Frost school of discipline.

The cameras return a month after filming without Frost to determine if she had a long term effect on the family. The revisit shows a happy and connected family, all members smiling and telling the camera how much Jo Frost did for their family and for their own self respect. The once-horrid children usually say simply I love JoJo or JoJo made me good — and it takes a cynical person to disbelieve their sweet little faces and not smile at their decidedly non-naughty behavior.
